At Weald, we offer a wide range of enrichment opportunities that inspire curiosity, develop problem-solving skills and expose students to a range of STEM-related careers.
Throughout the year, students take part in national events such as Maths Week, Biology Week and Science Week, which feature a variety of competitions, challenges and interactive lunchtime activities with something for all year groups.
Each year during Science Week, we welcome a scientist to deliver a mini-lecture in assembly, sharing insights into their research and career pathway. Recent speakers have included a physicist involved in the design of lunar landers, a biochemist conducting climate change research in the Arctic, and a palaeontologist sharing fieldwork discovering fossils in Brazil. These talks provide students with valuable opportunities to explore cutting-edge scientific research and gain a deeper understanding of the diverse careers available within STEM fields.
Students are encouraged to challenge themselves through prestigious national competitions, including the UK Mathematics Challenge, Biology Olympiad, Cambridge Chemistry Challenge and Physics Olympiad. These competitions reward academic excellence while developing critical thinking, resilience and analytical skills.
KS3 Science Club provides younger students with opportunities to investigate scientific concepts through practical experiments and hands-on activities. Selected Year 9 students are given the chance to attend three Maths masterclasses at The University of Kent.
For students considering further study in the sciences, we provide additional opportunities such as our
A Level Biology Residential, which allows students to develop their practical fieldwork skills and deepen their understanding of biological research beyond the classroom.
Students have opportunities to participate in external workshops, roadshows and other enrichment events. Recent opportunities have included a workshop on gene therapy at Tonbridge School for selected Year 11 students and a BAE Systems and Royal Navy Engineering Roadshow for all Year 8 students. Some students in Year 11, 12 and 13 have attended a talk on the science behind Black Holes, from a local Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society. All Year 12 students were treated to a lecture on the concept of infinity. This included the history of infinity, some of the mathematics behind it and some of the practical uses in other subjects. These experiences allow students to engage directly with experts and gain insight into real-world applications of STEM.
We also encourage students to showcase their knowledge and creativity through a variety of competitions. Recent examples include the Year 10 CSI Biology Challenge at Walthamstow Hall School and the Science Snippets Communication Competition at Tonbridge School, in which our students have reached the final for the past four years.
